Introducing The Exegesist
The Exegesist exists to explore sophisticated horror and its message about the human condition, or more accurately, human abberation. Just as this horror sub-genre itself seeks to do, this project aims at bringing darkness to light.
It also seeks to go beyond filmmakers' intentions, to explore their philosophical and theological assumptions, and those of the filmgoers they draw, to discuss what these artefacts might reveal concerning worldview, ideology, morality, desire and so on.
The project was inspired by my cultural exegesis paper, Zombies! They're Us!, which will be published by the University of Toronto's Journal of Religion and Poplular Culture in 2018. The paper analyses the late George A. Romero's zombie and its progeny. First, it unpacks how Romero and others use the zombie in its context to critique human nature. Secondly, the paper contrues this exegesis through theological categories.
